Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
Department of Endoscopy Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
Our department has 5 upper gastrointestinal staff members, 4 lower gastrointestinal staff members, and 4 staff members who concurrently work at the Cancer Screening Center, as well as oncology fellows, residents, and elective residents, who specialize in gastrointestinal endoscopy and routinely perform endoscopic examinations and treatments. We hold individual intradepartmental conferences (meetings for review and discussion) for esophageal, gastric, duodenal, and colorectal diseases, followed by extradepartmental conferences with the surgery departments. We also hold conferences with the pathology department to discuss the results after treatment. We actively participate participate in academic conferences and study groups, giving presentations and live demonstrations both in Japan and abroad.
Our department has a long history. When the National Cancer Center Hospital first opened in 1962, the department was just a small section of the basement where the gastroscopy team, including Takao Sakita and Yanao Oguro of the Department of Internal Medicine, performed examinations. It has since become a leader in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy in Japan.
